West Welding Oy to supply multi-fuel tanks for ICON 5 cruise ship

West Welding designs and manufactures multi-fuel tanks in Teuva, Finland, for a luxury cruise ship being built by Meyer Turku. The delivery of the tanks will take place during 2026.

ICON 5 is the fifth luxury cruise ship built by Meyer Turku for Royal Caribbean. West Welding will supply multi-fuel tanks for the ICON 5 luxury cruise ship. The tanks are designed for use with both LNG and biomethanol. The design of technical solutions for multi-fuel use further increases the amount of design work. Previously, the tanks for ICON ships were designed only for liquid natural gas (LNG).

This is the largest project in West Welding’s history. In terms of size, the delivery will be the largest special transport in the roads of Finland. Manufacturing will take up most of West Welding’s production capacity during 2025-2026. In connection with the project, we are investing in production facilities and transport routes to the Port of Kaskinen. The tanks have a volume of approximately 2300 m3 and weigh close to 300 tons, which is equivalent to the weight of approximately 150 passenger cars.

The project is a good strategic fit for West Welding, and provides local employment opportunities

The delivery suits West Welding well. Through this project, West Welding can utilize its core expertise in modern and innovative pressure equipment solutions, and this is one of the key elements in company’s strategy. The company’s evolved strategy and project-based operating model, in which design and manufacturing work together seamlessly, is particularly important in larger projects. “The agreement secures West Welding’s position as a supplier of large industrial process equipment. In the current situation, we are ready to do more projects like this,” says Panu Perasto, project leader at West Welding.

The delivery of two multi-fuel tanks supports positive career development and creates new employment opportunities at West Welding’s workshop in Teuva. The project will also employ many local subcontractors and long-term partners in the network at various stages of the project. Impact of the regional collaboration and expertise will develop, and we are thankful to be part of ICON-class ship. We are happy to be part of the biggest industrial project in Finland and take a role in extensive domestic delivery chain.

LNG fueled ships are a common choice in the maritime industry. Multi-fuel tanks can be used for biomethanol, which is one of the future alternatives to LNG. West Welding is inspired to be involved in projects that serve the green transition and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
